Best River Cruises for Couples in 2027
River cruising and romance have always had a natural affinity. There's something about drifting through the Wachau Valley at sunset, sharing a glass of Austrian Grüner Veltliner, watching the vineyards slide past that no resort or city hotel can quite replicate. For Australian couples looking for a genuinely romantic European holiday, a river cruise is consistently the top recommendation. This guide covers the best options for 2027.
Why River Cruising Is Perfect for Couples
• Slow, intimate travel. No rushing between cities, no navigating train stations with luggage. The ship does the moving while you sit on the sun deck together.
• Communal dining that doesn't feel forced. You dine with other passengers, but you also have each other the intimacy of a smaller ship means you're never lost in a crowd.
• Shared experiences without logistics. Every morning brings a new city, an excursion, a walk shared naturally without one partner having to navigate and the other waiting.
• Wine with every dinner. For wine-loving couples, this alone is a feature.
• Anniversary and milestone occasion cruises. Many couples choose a river cruise for a significant anniversary the combination of European cities, excellent food, and intimate atmosphere is ideal.

1. Danube: Vienna to Budapest (7-8 days)
The most romantic river cruise in the world, by most accounts. Best for: First river cruise as a couple, milestone anniversaries, romantic autumn sailing (September October).
2. Seine: Paris & Normandy (7-8 days)
Paris the world's most romantic city as your floating hotel for 2+ nights. Add Monet's garden at Giverny, the historic port of Honfleur, and the Normandy countryside. For couples who love art, literature, and French food culture, the Seine is unsurpassed.
3. Douro: Porto & the Wine Country (7-8 days)
Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the world's great romantic landscapes terraced vineyards rising dramatically above the river, port wine tastings at ancient quintas, and the extraordinary city of Porto with its azulejo-tiled buildings and waterfront at sunset. Best in September October for the harvest season.
4. Rhine: The Gorge & Alsace (5-7 days)
The castles of the Middle Rhine Gorge, the half-timbered villages of Alsace, and the wine of both regions. A Rhine Christmas markets cruise with Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik and Cologne's Cathedral market is particularly atmospheric for couples.

• Request a double-bed cabin at time of booking (not twin). River ship cabins are configured as either twin (two single beds) or double specify your preference early as double-bed cabins are limited.
• Consider a cabin upgrade for a more spacious room upper deck and middle deck cabins vary in size and view quality.
• Book a shoulder-season sailing (April-May or September-October) fewer passengers on popular sailings, and the vineyards in harvest or blossom are particularly beautiful.
• Add a pre or post cruise hotel in Vienna or Budapest for extra romance two nights at a 4-star hotel in either city adds significantly to a romantic holiday.
