Bucket List River Cruises for Australian Travellers
There are river cruises and then there are once-in-a-lifetime voyages that justify everything: the long-haul flight, the planning, the investment. These are the bucket list river cruise experiences in the CroisiEurope portfolio: the journeys that passengers describe for the rest of their lives as the best trip they've ever taken.
1. The Grand European Voyage: Amsterdam to Budapest
The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal completed in 1992 after 68 years of construction makes possible one of the great inland waterway journeys in the world: Amsterdam on the North Sea to Budapest on the Danube, through the heart of Europe. The ship travels through the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary five countries, more than 20 cities and towns, two UNESCO World Heritage river gorges, and two of the world's great capitals. 21 days of continuous river travel. Nothing else in river cruising offers this scope.
Length: 17-21 days. Best season: May-October.
2. The Wachau in Autumn Colour: Passau to Budapest in October
The Austrian Danube between Melk and Krems in mid-October when the vineyards of the Wachau are at full harvest colour, the apricot orchards have turned gold, and the baroque tower of Dürnstein appears through a morning mist above the river is one of the great natural spectacles of European travel. Combine this with the harvest season at Krems wineries and the Vienna Philharmonic's autumn concert season, and this itinerary is the Danube at its absolute peak.
Length: 8-12 days. Best dates: first two weeks of October.
3. The Douro Harvest: Porto to Barca d'Alva in September
September on the Douro is the vindima the harvest. The quintas are in full production; the valley smells of fermenting Touriga Nacional; the harvest workers move through the steeply terraced vineyards by hand. A quinta dinner during harvest long table, local wine, the sounds of the harvest outside is one of the most atmospheric dining experiences in the world. Add Porto's extraordinary Ribeira district and the port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, and this is the Douro at its most essential.
Length: 7-8 days. Best dates: first three weeks of September.
4. The Mekong at Dusk: Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap
The CroisiEurope Mekong cruise travels through a world utterly unlike Europe: the floating villages of the Mekong Delta, the Cambodian countryside untouched by the 21st century, Phnom Penh's Royal Palace and the haunting Tuol Sleng memorial, and the approach to Angkor Wat by sunrise across the moat one of the great travel experiences in the world, accessible only after a river cruise through Cambodia. This is the journey that reframes everything you thought you knew about Southeast Asia.
Length: 11-15 days. Best season: November-February (dry season).
5. The Christmas Rhine: Cologne to Strasbourg in December
Europe's Christmas market season on the Rhine Cologne Cathedral illuminated against a winter sky, Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik filling the narrow lanes of La Petite France, Rüdesheim's vineyard market in the Drosselgasse, Mainz's cathedral square filled with hand-carved wooden decorations is a genuinely festive and atmospheric experience that bears no resemblance to the sanitised 'Christmas experience' available at home. This is the real thing, unchanged for centuries.
Length: 7 days. Best dates: late November to mid-December.
6. The Nile in November: Luxor to Aswan
The Nile is the oldest river cruise in the world travellers have been journeying between Luxor and Aswan to see the pharaonic temples since the 18th century. The Valley of the Kings (where Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1922), the 134-column hypostyle hall at Karnak, the completely preserved Ptolemaic temple at Edfu, and the island temple of Philae at Aswan these are not minor historical sites. They are among the most significant built environments in human history. November is the best month: cool enough for comfortable sightseeing, before the Christmas peak.
Length: 8-12 days. Best season: October-February.
