Combining a River Cruise with a European Land Tour
For Australian travellers making the long journey to Europe, the smartest trip design combines a river cruise with time on land either as a pre/post extension or as a separate leg of the same journey. River cruises move efficiently but they move on the water; some of Europe's greatest destinations are accessible only on land. Here's how to build the ultimate combined trip.
The Core Principle: One Long Trip, Multiple Modes
Australian travellers who've been to Europe multiple times understand that the journey time (20+ hours each way) means each trip should be maximised. A 7-day river cruise embedded in a 3-week European trip gives you the best of both worlds: the efficiency, comfort, and all-inclusive value of the cruise, plus the freedom and depth of independent land travel.
The Best Land + River Combinations
The Grand Central European Trip: Vienna → Danube Cruise → Budapest + Prague
Fly into Vienna (via Singapore or Dubai 1 stop from Australia). Spend 4 days in Vienna independently. Board the Danube cruise in Vienna (or Passau, with a train from Vienna). Disembark in Budapest. Spend 3 days in Budapest. Take the train to Prague (2.5 hours by bus, 6 hours by train). Spend 3-4 days in Prague. Fly home from Prague.
Total trip: 3-4 weeks. Covers four extraordinary countries. Open-jaw flights: Sydney → Vienna, Prague → Sydney.
The French Grand Tour: Paris + Provence → Seine or Rhône Cruise
Fly into Paris (via Dubai or Singapore). 5 days in Paris independently. Board the Seine cruise in Paris. Disembark in Rouen or Honfleur (Normandy). Return to Paris by train. Continue to the South of France by TGV (Avignon, Arles, or Nice). 4-5 days in Provence. Fly home from Nice.
Total trip: 3-4 weeks. Alternatively, take the Rhône cruise from Lyon to Avignon and start the Provence leg directly from the cruise.
The Iberian Peninsula: Porto → Douro Cruise → Salamanca → Madrid
Fly into Porto (via Doha on Qatar Airways or via London). 3-4 days in Porto. Board the Douro cruise in Porto. Disembark near Salamanca, Spain. 2 days in Salamanca. Train to Madrid (2.5 hours). 3-4 days in Madrid. Fly home from Madrid.
Total trip: 2.5-3 weeks. Portugal and Spain in a single connected journey.
The Rhine + Switzerland: Amsterdam → Rhine Cruise → Basel → Swiss Alps
Fly into Amsterdam (via Singapore Airlines). 3 days in Amsterdam. Board the Rhine cruise Amsterdam to Basel (7 days). Disembark in Basel. Train to Zurich (55 minutes). 1 night in Zurich. Train to Interlaken or Lucerne. 4 5 days in the Swiss Alps. Fly home from Zurich.
Total trip: 2.5 weeks. A perfect pairing Rhine river scenery + Swiss Alpine scenery.
Logistics: Making the Land-Cruise Combination Work
• Luggage: Pack for both the cruise (limited cabin storage) and the land portion. One medium suitcase plus a daypack is manageable for both.
• Booking timing: Book the cruise first (capacity is limited); flights and hotels can be booked closer to departure.
• Rail in Europe: European inter-city trains are fast, comfortable, and should be pre-booked for the best prices.
• Open-jaw flights: Essential for the land-cruise combination. Fly into the start city, home from the end city.
