Early Bird vs Last-Minute River Cruise Deals
Should you book your river cruise as early as possible or wait for a last-minute deal? For most Australians, this is a genuine question. The answer depends on which cruise, which season, and your flexibility. Here's the honest breakdown.

The Case for Early Booking
For the vast majority of Australians considering a European river cruise, early booking is the better strategy. Here's why:
• Best cabin selection: River ships have a limited number of cabins. Middle deck, upper deck, and double-bed configurations go first. Book early and you get the cabin you want. Book late and you take what's left.
• Early booking discounts: CroisiEurope regularly offers 10 20% off for bookings made 9 12 months in advance. This is genuine savings, not manufactured urgency.
• Christmas markets sell out: The Danube and Rhine Christmas market sailings in November December are among the most in-demand sailings in the entire CroisiEurope program. Many departure dates sell out 12 18 months in advance. Waiting for a last-minute deal on these is a near-certain disappointment.
• Flight availability: Booking your cruise early gives you time to book flights at favourable prices and with your preferred airline. October departures booked in September rarely have great economy options from Australia.
• Travel insurance starts from deposit: Purchasing travel insurance at the time of deposit (not at travel time) ensures you're covered for cancellation from day one, including for pre-existing medical conditions in some policies.
When Last-Minute Deals Exist
Last-minute river cruise discounts do occasionally appear but they are less common and less significant than ocean cruise last-minute deals. The reasons:
• River ships are small (100 180 passengers). A few unsold cabins on a smaller ship means less urgency to discount than an ocean ship with thousands of empty berths.
• Most CroisiEurope sailings fill without needing significant discounting. Peak season (summer) and Christmas markets fill at full price.
• Last-minute discounts, when they appear, are typically on less popular departure dates or shoulder season sailings.
The Honest Recommendation
For Australians booking a European river cruise for 2027:
• Book 9 12 months ahead for best cabin selection, best pricing, and peace of mind on flights.
• If you're flexible on dates and not targeting Christmas markets, ask CroisiEurope Australia about any current promotions there may be specific sailings on special.
• Do not wait for a last-minute deal on Christmas market sailings. They will sell out.
