How Much Do Shore Excursions Cost on CroisiEurope?
For Australian travellers budgeting their CroisiEurope cruise, understanding excursion costs is important particularly since shore excursions are not included in the base price for most European itineraries. Here is the honest guide to excursion pricing and how to budget.
Typical Excursion Price Ranges (European Itineraries)
Standard guided walking tour (2-3 hours): €25-€45 per person. These cover the main highlights of each port city with a bilingual guide.
Coach excursion to a nearby site: €35-€65 per person. Includes coach transport and guided entry to the destination (Melk Abbey, Versailles, Giverny, Salamanca).
Wine tasting / cellar door visit: €30-€60 per person. Includes guided tasting of 3-6 regional wines, typically with cellar tour.
Cycling excursion: €25-€45 per person. Bicycle hire and guide included.
Premium exclusive excursion (small group, private access): €80-€150+ per person. Significantly more expensive but a materially different experience.
Full-day combined excursion: €60 €100 per person. Combines multiple sites or a longer programme into a single day.
Budgeting for Excursions
On a 7-day European river cruise visiting 6-8 ports, a couple choosing one standard excursion per port should budget approximately:
• 6 ports × €35 average × 2 people = €420 (approximately AUD $700) for standard excursions.
• If choosing a mix of standard and one premium excursion: add €80-€150 per person for the premium.
• Full 7-day excursion budget for a couple: AUD $700-$1,200 is a reasonable estimate for a standard-to-moderate excursion programme.
This is separate from your cruise cost and should be added to your total holiday budget.
Money-Saving Tips
Explore independently: Many CroisiEurope ports are compact enough to explore without a guide. Vienna's Ringstrasse, Budapest's Castle Hill, Strasbourg's Grande Île, and Porto's Ribeira are all navigable with a map and a good guidebook. Independent exploration costs nothing except the entry fees to specific sites.
Combine the guide's orientation with free time: Join the standard excursion for the first hour (orientation and key context), then peel away and continue independently. This is accepted practice on most CroisiEurope excursions.
Pre-book excursions: Pre-booking popular excursions through CroisiEurope Australia before departure may offer better availability on the most in-demand options.
Choose selectively: Not every port needs a guided excursion. Reserve excursion spending for the sites where a guide genuinely adds value Melk Abbey, the Wachau wine estates, Giverny and explore the simpler ports independently.
Excursions on International Itineraries (Mekong, Nile, Amazon)
All shore excursions are included in the base price for CroisiEurope's Mekong, African river, and Amazon itineraries. There is no additional excursion budget required every guided activity, temple visit, and cultural experience is covered. This is one of the significant advantages of these itineraries over European equivalents.
