How to Choose Your Cabin on a River Cruise
Choosing the right cabin on a river cruise is one of the most important decisions you'll make and one of the least well-explained by most booking guides. Unlike ocean cruise ships with their complex deck hierarchies and cabin categories, river cruise ship cabins are relatively straightforward, but the differences that do exist genuinely matter. Here's what you need to know.
River Ship Cabin Basics
CroisiEurope river ships typically have three to four cabin categories, spread across two or three decks. The ship is much smaller than an ocean cruise ship 110 135 metres long, 11 13 metres wide so no cabin is far from the action. The quality difference between cabin categories is primarily about size, window type, and deck position.
Lower Deck Cabins
Lower deck cabins are the entry-level option on most river ships. They sit closer to the waterline and therefore have smaller, fixed windows (portholes) rather than floor-to-ceiling windows. The cabin itself is typically 12 15 square metres: a double or twin bed, wardrobe, desk, bathroom with shower. Comfortable, functional, and usually 20 30% less expensive than upper deck equivalents.
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers who spend most of their time on deck or in the dining room, not in the cabin.

Middle Deck Cabins The Sweet Spot
Middle deck cabins offer the best value on most river ships. The windows are typically larger floor-level or full-height French windows in many cases and the cabins are a few square metres larger than lower deck equivalents. On many CroisiEurope ships, middle deck cabins open directly onto the promenade deck.
Best for: Most travellers. The combination of price, window size, and deck access makes middle deck the most popular choice.
Upper Deck Suites
The largest and best-positioned cabins on the ship. Suites on CroisiEurope ships offer more floor space (18 22 sqm), full-height panoramic windows, and in some cases a small balcony or French balcony (a floor-to-ceiling window that opens inward). Suites are positioned at the bow or stern the most visually striking position on the ship.
Best for: Travellers who spend significant time in their cabin, want maximum light and views, or are celebrating a special occasion.
Window Type Matters
The single most important cabin feature on a river cruise is the window. Unlike ocean ships, where the view from a porthole is largely sea, a river cruise porthole or small window shows you the riverbank, villages, castles, and vineyards passing continuously. A larger window dramatically increases the quality of the in-cabin experience.
• Porthole (fixed, round): Lower deck cabins. River is visible but limited.
• Fixed floor-level window: Common in middle deck. Good view when stationary; can feel slightly below the action.
• French window (opens inward): Excellent essentially a glass wall that brings the river into the cabin.
• French balcony or true balcony: Best. Only available in suites on most river ships.
Cabin Location: Forward, Midship, or Aft
Most river ships are relatively stable regardless of cabin position this is not the ocean. However, the midship position (middle of the ship's length) is the most stable if motion sensitivity is a concern. Forward and aft cabins offer more dramatic views when docking or departing.
Practical Tips for Cabin Selection
• Book early for upper deck and suite cabins they sell out first.
• If you snore or have light sleep, consider twin beds (separate beds) rather than a double.
• Storage is limited in all cabins pack light and use soft-sided luggage.
• Ask CroisiEurope Australia (1300 739 652) about specific ship deck plans before booking.
