Most Common Packing Mistakes on a CroisiEurope River Cruise
Packing for a river cruise is different from packing for a hotel holiday, a safari, or an ocean cruise. The specific constraints of river cruise travel limited cabin storage, active shore excursions on cobblestoned surfaces, smart-casual dining create a distinct packing challenge. Here are the most common mistakes Australian first-timers make, and how to avoid them.

Mistake 1: Bringing Too Much Luggage
This is by far the most common mistake. River cruise cabin storage is limited a modest wardrobe (6 8 drawers) and a hanging area for approximately 12 items. Bringing a large suitcase (75cm+) means it will not fit under the bed (which has limited clearance) and will need to remain open on the floor, consuming valuable floor space in a 15 20 sqm cabin.
Solution: One medium suitcase (60 65 cm) plus a daypack per person. Pack for one week, plan to re-wear items. Most ships have a laundry service (charge applies) if you need items cleaned on longer voyages.

Mistake 2: Bringing Impractical Shoes
Fashionable shoes heels, unsupportive sandals, new leather shoes that haven't been broken in are a genuine problem on European cobblestone surfaces. Many first-time cruisers underestimate how much walking is involved (2 5 km per excursion on uneven medieval stone surfaces) and arrive with footwear that causes blisters by day two.
Solution: One pair of genuinely comfortable, well-worn walking shoes. One pair of smart-casual shoes for evenings (clean, comfortable sneakers are perfectly acceptable). Nothing else is necessary for most 7-day cruises.
Mistake 3: Packing Formal Attire
Australian travellers coming from an ocean cruise context sometimes pack formal wear for river cruising assuming formal nights exist. They do not. CroisiEurope is smart casual throughout. A suit, evening gown, or formal shoes is wasted luggage weight on a river cruise.
Solution: Smart casual for every dinner. Clean trousers, collared shirt, and clean shoes for men. A dress or smart blouse and trousers for women. No jacket required.

Mistake 4: Not Packing Layers
European weather is variable at any season. Spring and autumn river cruises can have cold mornings and warm afternoons; summer evenings on the sun deck can be cooler than expected; Christmas market season is genuinely cold. Packing only summer clothes for a September Douro cruise is a mistake.
Solution: Pack layers lightweight base, mid-layer (long-sleeved shirt or light cardigan), and one outer layer (waterproof, packable). This approach covers all conditions without excess weight.
Mistake 5: Forgetting Cash
Most on-board expenses are included in the cruise price and don't require payment during the voyage. But many passengers forget to bring Euro cash for gratuities (the end-of-cruise tip to crew is typically done in cash) and for small purchases ashore a coffee, a market stall purchase, a museum entry not covered by an excursion.
Solution: Bring €100 €200 per person in Euro cash for gratuities and small ashore expenses. Supplement with an ATM card for larger purchases.

Mistake 6: Forgetting a Portable Phone Charger
A full day of photo-taking, navigation, and messaging drains a phone battery rapidly. There is no opportunity to charge while ashore. An empty phone at 3pm in a foreign city when you need navigation back to the ship is stressful.
Solution: A compact portable charger (power bank) is one of the most useful travel items for river cruising. Charge it overnight in your cabin; carry it ashore each day.
Mistake 7: Over-Packing Medications
The opposite of the cash mistake some travellers pack every medication they own 'just in case.' Most basic medications are available in European pharmacies (Apotheke in Germany/Austria, Pharmacie in France, Farmácia in Portugal). Unless your medication is specialised or prescription-only, you don't need to bring 14 days of every OTC remedy you might conceivably need.
Solution: Bring your regular prescription medications (plus 50% extra). Bring 3 4 key OTC items (paracetamol, antihistamine, antidiarrheal). Trust European pharmacies for anything else.
