The Best Winter River Cruises in Europe
When most Australians think of European river cruising, they imagine summer vineyards or autumn harvest. But winter river cruising specifically the Christmas markets and New Year sailings of November and December offers one of the most magical travel experiences available anywhere in the world. Here's what you need to know about winter river cruises for 2027.
What 'Winter River Cruising' Means in Practice
European river cruise seasons officially run from approximately March to December. 'Winter' in river cruise terms means November and December specifically the Advent period when Christmas markets transform Central European cities.
There are no river cruises in January and February on most European waterways the ships are in maintenance during the coldest months. The Christmas markets season (late November through late December) is the final and often most spectacular chapter of the European river cruise year.
The Christmas Markets Experience
European Christmas markets have been part of Central European culture since the Middle Ages. The Danube and Rhine pass through some of the finest and a river cruise during Advent lets you visit multiple markets without the hotel-booking nightmare of the peak December period.
• Vienna's Rathausmarkt: The most elegant ice skating, Glühwein, handmade crafts in the shadow of the neo-Gothic City Hall
• Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik: The oldest in France (since 1570) the illuminated old town is among the most beautiful sights in Europe at Christmas
• Cologne's Cathedral market: 7 different markets in one city, with the Cathedral backdrop being one of the most iconic
• Budapest's Vörösmarty Square: Carved wooden stalls, kürtőskalács (chimney cake), Hungarian pálinka wonderfully authentic
• Passau, Bavaria: A smaller, more intimate market in a perfectly preserved medieval German city at the confluence of three rivers

These are the most celebratory sailings in the program gala dinners, deck-side celebrations, and once-in-a-lifetime locations for the midnight countdown.
