The Ultimate River Cruise Packing Guide

Packing for a European river cruise is different from packing for a resort holiday or a city break. The ship's storage is compact. You'll walk on cobblestones, climb to castle ruins, and sit at dinner tables sometimes on the same day. Getting the balance right makes the trip significantly more comfortable. This is the packing guide built specifically for Australian river cruisers.

The Key Rule: Pack Light

River ship cabins are comfortable but not large think of a well-designed hotel room rather than a suite. Storage includes a wardrobe, some drawers, and under-bed luggage space. A large suitcase and a carry-on is manageable; adding a third bag starts to cause problems. Aim for one medium suitcase (no more than 23kg) and a small daypack.

Clothes: What to Bring

Daytime / Shore Excursions

• Comfortable walking shoes this is the single most important item. You will walk on cobblestones, uneven stone paths, and castle steps. No stilettos. No shoes you haven't broken in.

• Lightweight layers European spring and autumn temperatures can swing 10 15 degrees between morning and afternoon. A zip-up fleece or light jacket over a t-shirt covers both.

• One waterproof jacket or packable rain jacket the Rhine and Danube can deliver rain in any month.

• Casual trousers or jeans (2 pairs is sufficient for a 7 8 day cruise)

• Shorts or light trousers for warm summer sailings

• Comfortable flat shoes or sandals for onboard wear

Evening / Dinner

CroisiEurope is smart-casual in the evenings. You don't need formal wear there's no formal night, no black-tie dinner. A nice shirt and trousers for men, a simple dress or smart outfit for women, covers every evening occasion including the Captain's gala dinner.

• 2 3 smart-casual evening outfits (these rotate with daybreak, so you need fewer than you think)

Seasonal Specifics

Winter / Christmas Markets (Nov Dec): Warm coat, waterproof boots, gloves, scarf, thermal underlayer. Temperatures can reach -5°C to +5°C.

Summer (Jun Aug): Lightweight fabrics, sun hat, sunscreen sun deck exposure is significant. Pack a light cardigan for air-conditioned dining room.
