What Happens If I Miss the CroisiEurope Ship?
Missing the ship the moment every river cruise passenger fears does happen. Flights are delayed, excursions overrun, taxis don't arrive. Here is the complete guide to what happens, what CroisiEurope does, and how to minimise the risk.
Missing the Ship at Embarkation (Day 1)
If you miss the ship's departure on the first day due to a flight delay or other travel disruption, you are responsible for catching up with the vessel at the next port. CroisiEurope Australia (1300 739 652) should be contacted immediately the team can advise on the ship's next port of call and the most efficient way to reach it.
Most river cruise embarkation cities are connected by excellent rail and road infrastructure. Passau to Vienna (a common Danube start): 2.5 hours by train. Amsterdam to Cologne (Rhine start): 2.5 hours by train. Catching up with the ship at the next port is usually logistically manageable but it is your expense. Travel insurance covering flight delay should reimburse reasonable costs.
Missing the Ship Mid-Cruise (from a Shore Excursion)
If you are ashore during a shore excursion or free time and the ship departs without you, here is what happens:
• The ship will wait a reasonable time for late passengers typically 15 30 minutes beyond the stated departure time.
• The cruise director will make PA announcements and attempt to contact passengers by mobile phone.
• If you cannot be reached and the ship must depart (tide, lock schedules, and downstream traffic are often time-critical on European rivers), you are responsible for reaching the next port independently.
• CroisiEurope reception staff will advise you by phone of the next port and estimated arrival time. Train and taxi connections between most European river ports are good.
• Your cabin and belongings remain secure on the ship.
The Golden Rule: Know the Ship's Departure Time
Every morning, the day's programme (delivered to your cabin the previous evening) states the port departure time clearly. This is the one non-negotiable piece of information on a river cruise. Many passengers set a phone alarm 30 minutes before the stated departure time as insurance.
How to Minimise the Risk
• Always check departure time before going ashore it is on the daily programme and on the gangway board.
• If joining a CroisiEurope-organised excursion, the excursion guide is responsible for returning the group on time. Stay with the group.
• If exploring independently, give yourself a 45-minute buffer before departure.
• Store the ship's mobile number (given at embarkation) in your phone call immediately if you are running late.
• Never leave the last port visit until the last minute.
Travel Insurance for Missed Departure
Comprehensive travel insurance should include missed departure coverage covering additional transport costs incurred to catch up with the ship. Keep all receipts if you need to make a claim.
