What Happens If the River Is Too High or Too Low?
River water levels are one of the genuine uncertainties of river cruising and one that every prospective Australian traveller should understand. Unlike ocean cruising, where the sea is always navigable, rivers are affected by rainfall, snowmelt, drought, and climate patterns. CroisiEurope has 50 years of experience managing water level challenges. Here is the honest guide.

How Water Levels Affect River Cruising

Low Water (Drought Conditions)
When a river runs too low, cruise ships may be unable to navigate certain sections particularly on the Danube, which is prone to drought-related low water in late summer. The ship may draw too much water to pass through shallow stretches, or bridges may be impassable (a vessel rides higher relative to the bridge when heavily loaded and the water is low).
Low water on the Danube has become a more frequent occurrence due to climate change. The summers of 2018, 2022, and 2023 saw significant low water disruptions affecting multiple operators.
High Water (Flood Conditions)
When a river runs too high, the ship may be unable to pass under low bridges (the ship sits higher in the water on a flooded river), locks may close for safety reasons, and port moorings may be inaccessible. High water is most common in spring (Alpine snowmelt on the Danube and Rhine) and after significant rainfall events.

What CroisiEurope Does When Water Levels Are Problematic
CroisiEurope has more experience managing water level disruptions than any other river cruise operator 50 years of operating on European rivers in all conditions. The company's response depends on the severity and the specific section affected:
Minor disruption: The ship adjusts its speed, timing, or anchoring to work around the affected section. Most water level fluctuations are managed without passenger impact.
Moderate disruption: The itinerary may be adjusted skipping one port and substituting another accessible by coach, or reversing the order of ports. Passengers are informed promptly.
Significant disruption (ship cannot proceed): If the ship cannot navigate a section of the river, CroisiEurope may use coaches to transfer passengers to a second ship on the other side of the obstruction. This is called a 'ship swap' and is managed by CroisiEurope at no additional cost to passengers. It is not the experience advertised, but it is the professional management of an uncontrollable situation.
Cruise cancellation: In extreme cases complete river closure, severe flood damage CroisiEurope may cancel departures. A full refund or alternative departure offer is provided.
Which Rivers Are Most Affected
Danube: Most susceptible to low water in summer (July September) and high water in spring (April May). The middle Danube between Regensburg and Vienna is the most sensitive section.
Rhine: High water (spring floods) and occasionally low water (summer drought). More resilient than the Danube due to Rhine regulation infrastructure.
Douro: Managed by a series of locks and dams the Douro's water levels are more stable than the Danube and Rhine. Less susceptible to disruption.
Seine: Occasional high water disruption in winter/spring. Generally stable for the cruise season.

How to Manage the Risk
• Travel insurance: Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include 'cruise interruption' coverage. Check your policy.
• Season choice: Late September to October is generally the most stable water level period for the Danube. June and early July tend to be more stable than August on the Rhine.
• Accept it: River conditions are beyond any operator's control. The appropriate response is to understand the risk, ensure your insurance covers disruptions, and approach any itinerary variation with flexibility.
