What to Expect on Your First River Cruise
You've booked your first European river cruise. Congratulations you're about to experience one of the most enjoyable formats of travel available to Australians. But it's natural to wonder: what exactly will happen? What will the days feel like? What does the ship look like? Will I be bored? Will I like my fellow passengers? This guide answers everything, honestly.

Embarkation Day
You arrive at the cruise departure port (Vienna, Amsterdam, Porto, Strasbourg depending on your itinerary). Your luggage is taken from the coach or taxi and brought to your cabin. You check in at the ship's reception desk, receive your cabin key and cabin card (which becomes your onboard account), and are shown to your cabin.
The rest of embarkation day is typically free explore the city independently, or rest after the long flight from Australia. In the evening, there's a welcome cocktail and dinner, followed by a briefing from the cruise director about the next day's programme.

A Typical Day
7:00am: Breakfast is served in the restaurant. Continental and cooked options. The ship may have moved overnight you wake up in a new city.
9:00am: The included shore excursion departs from the gangplank. A local guide leads your group through the old town, the main monument, or a coach excursion to a nearby site.
12:00pm: Return to the ship for lunch (or eat independently ashore if you prefer). Lunch includes wine service.
Afternoon: Free time in port. Explore independently wander the markets, visit a museum, sit at a café. Or join an optional premium excursion if you've booked one.
5:00 6:00pm: Return to the ship. The ship may sail while you're having a pre-dinner drink at the bar.
7:00pm: Dinner. Three courses, wine included. Seated with your fellow passengers communal tables or smaller groups depending on your preference. Conversation is usually good.
After dinner: The lounge bar is open. A pianist or small band may play. Some passengers go straight to bed (the days are full). Others stay and socialise.
The Ship
It's smaller than you might imagine from the brochure photos but more comfortable. The lounge is cosy, not grand. The restaurant is the right size to seat everyone at once without feeling crowded. The sun deck is where people congregate during scenic stretches deckchairs, a rail to lean on, coffee in hand.
Your cabin has everything you need: a comfortable bed (twin or double configuration), an en-suite bathroom with shower, storage for two suitcases worth of clothing, and a window (and on upper decks, panoramic windows or French balconies depending on the ship).

Your Fellow Passengers
On a CroisiEurope cruise, you're typically sailing with a mix of nationalities French, Australian, British, German, American. The Australian contingent is usually larger than you'd expect; Australians have discovered CroisiEurope in significant numbers.
The community on a 150-person ship forms surprisingly quickly. By day two, you'll have met the people who always sit at the same table at breakfast, the couple from Adelaide who are on their third CroisiEurope cruise, and the solo traveller from Sydney who turns out to be delightful company. Many people report the fellow passengers as one of the trip's highlights.
What Surprises First-Timers
• How fast the days fill up. A port, an excursion, a walk, lunch, more walking, dinner, and a glass of wine at the bar 6am to 10pm passes quickly.
• How good the food is. First-timers often expect mass-catering cafeteria food and are surprised by a proper three-course dinner with wine.
• How pleasant the slow pace of sailing is. Watching the Rhine Gorge slide past from the sun deck is genuinely wonderful.
• How social it is. River cruises create community faster than any other travel format.
